Lehnstuhl: A Unique Lounge Chair in the Thonet Bentwood Language

Pushing the Boundaries of Bentwood Furniture Design

The Lehnstuhl lounge chair, designed by Nigel Coates, is a remarkable piece that combines the elegance of traditional Thonet bentwood techniques with innovative design elements. Commissioned by Wiener GTV Design, this chair showcases the skill and creativity of the designer and the manufacturer.

Inspired by earlier pieces of bentwood furniture in the Thonet tradition, Nigel Coates pushed the boundaries of production techniques to create the Lehnstuhl. The chair consists of three exceptionally long elements, skillfully joined together to emphasize a choreographic sense of movement and a body-like composition.

What sets the Lehnstuhl apart is its static elongated design, a departure from the typical Thonet bentwood chairs. The chair's frame is made using traditional steam bent beech, while the seat and back are available in Viennese cane or upholstered options.

The Lehnstuhl measures 74cm in width, 88cm in depth, and 85cm in height, providing ample space for a comfortable seating experience. Its flowing and fluid design, along with its oversized proportions, make it a stylish and iconic addition to any living space.

Although not interactive in the traditional sense, the Lehnstuhl is part of a collection that includes the Bodystuhl and Hocker, creating a fluid and relaxed furnishing environment when combined. This collection embodies the new values of Wiener GTV Design.

The Lehnstuhl was first presented by Wiener GTV Design at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in 2014, where it quickly became a symbol of the company's innovative approach. Nigel Coates, along with Andrea Farnelli, worked diligently to capture a new outline using traditional techniques within the limits of production.

Recognized for its outstanding design, the Lehnstuhl received the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The chair's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

The Lehnstuhl lounge chair is a testament to the marriage of tradition and innovation in furniture design. Its unique form and attention to detail make it a standout piece that will enhance any interior space.
